Being injured at work can be a very stressful and overwhelming experience. In this article, we will give you a checklist of what to do so that you will be able to approach the matter correctly and receive the compensation you deserve.
The first thing to do is to seek medical attention. When you are receiving medical attention, ensure that you keep any and all receipts that you receive. These may include receipts for crutches, pain killers, hospital fees and ambulance services.
Report (In Writing) Your Injury
The next step to take, after receiving the medical attention you need, is to submit a written report to your supervisor, detailing the incident.
You should include:
- The date and time when the injury happened
- Exactly where it happened
- Exactly what happened
- If there was anybody else involved
Make sure to do this as soon as possible, as some workplaces have a short filing deadline. This period is often 30 days, however, do not risk it. You don’t want to lose out on compensation because you waited too long.
Lodge a Claim Form
If you wish to claim WorkSafe entitlements as compensation for your injury, you will have to lodge a WorkSafe approved form. These can be downloaded from their online website.
Certificate of Capacity
If you are unable to work as a result of your injury, obtain a certificate of capacity from your doctor. Submit this to your employer alongside your claim form as soon as possible.
During this time, you may wish to talk to a lawyer to discuss your options and entitlements. At Stacks Goudkamp, we offer complimentary, no-obligation interviews where we will discuss your situation and advise you on options that will be available to you.
If you need any help with the lodging of your claim, contact us as soon as possible so we can offer assistance. Assistance in most situations, especially those involving Work Injury Damages claims, will cost you nothing.
Heal
After you have lodged your claims and submitted all the necessary documents, take as much time as you need to heal. Follow your doctor’s instructions to make sure that you recover appropriately, and do not return to work until you feel better and able.

- Received Medical Attention.
- Recorded all details of your injury, including time, date, location and those involved.
- Notified your employer – in writing.
- Lodged a Claim Form.
- Received legal advice.
- Taken adequate time to heal.
