Many patients across the world have experienced opacification (cloudy vision) and worsening of their vision after having cataract surgery or lens replacement surgery that used lenses manufactured by Oculentis, referred to as the Intraocular lenses. Device Technologies Australia was the exclusive distributor of the Oculentis Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) in Australia.
Some of these visionary problems include blurry vision, minimal vision, blind spots, cloudiness in the vision, light sensitivity and poor vision. These problems are reported to manifest years after the initial surgery and may be life-changing. Many patients are having their Intraocular lenses explanted or replaced however this also carries with it significant risks.
These Intraocular lenses were designed to improve a patient’s eye sight and treat eye disease, in particular cataracts. Oculentis claimed that these lenses would last the patient’s lifetime but instead, the implantation of these lenses have unfortunately led many patients with permanent visual disturbances and a complete loss of independence.
The Oculentis Lens Recall
Following an investigation, Oculentis identified the cause of the opacification as a possible interaction between silicone residue on the lens and phosphate crystals from a detergent that was previously used in the cleaning/ hydration process of the lenses prior to 2015.
Oculentis issued two lens recall notices relating to the Lentis Foldable Intraocular Lenses in 2014 and 2017 to alert providers and users of the surface calcification of the lenses which could lead to opacification.
They subsequently stopped using the cleaning detergent which they identified may have been the cause of the opacification problems.
Oculentis were declared bankrupt in September 2021 after grappling with legal issues over its defective intraocular lenses over several years.
