An extract of the citation about James’ extraordinary academic achievements is as follows:
“James is an esteemed scholar and practitioner in the field of private law and is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts in tort law. He is currently Professor of the Law of Obligations in the prestigious University of Oxford – a revered and coveted position that is the pinnacle of a rapid and impressive career curve to date. He also holds or has held several visiting or honorary appointments, including with the National University of Singapore, Harvard Law School, the University of Western Australia and UOW.
James has brought critical examination and explication to the field of tort law, influencing thought and scholarship in this notoriously complex area through intellectual mastery and sound legal analysis. His immense scholarly output includes more than 100 publications, and his research has appeared in the most respected outlets and been cited by judges in numerous jurisdictions.
After earning a first class honours degree and the University Medal in law at UOW, James secured a prized associateship to one of the nation’s most influential judges, the Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG, of the High Court of Australia. As a Clarendon Scholar, he read for the Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford, and subsequently added a doctorate to his impressive academic portfolio.
James was made an Academic Fellow of the Inner Temple in 2013 and is an advisor to the American Law Institute’s Restatement on the Law of Torts to the Person. He supports UOW law students who are considering pursuing postgraduate study and provides valuable advice to UOW law alumni arriving and working in London.
Chancellor, Professor James Goudkamp is an exceptional scholar who has demonstrated sustained intellectual achievement beyond his years and made a considerable contribution to our understanding of the law.
James is committed to inspiring and helping the next generation, at University of Wollongong, Oxford and further afield. He has supported UOW law students who are considering postgraduate study and provided valuable advice to UOW law alumni arriving and working in London.
It is with great pleasure that I present Professor James Goudkamp for the Alumni Award for Research and Scholarship.”
